CHARLES SMART, President
Charles Smart has been a leading figure in the fields of sales and demand forecasting and business planning for decades.
As president, Mr. Smart directs the strategic development of the company and its products, and manages industry alliances. He has co-developed several forecasting innovations, including a technology for Intermittent Demand Forecasting that was awarded a U.S. Patent and was a finalist in the APICS Corporate Awards of Excellence for Innovation in 2000.
Prior to founding Smart Software, he was a management consultant at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI International) and Policy Analysis, Inc., specializing in strategic business planning, economic and forecasting applications. He has given addresses at the APICS International Conference and Exposition, and the Institute of Business Forecasting Best Practices Conferences. His articles have been published in a variety of industry magazines, including APICSThe Performance Advantage, Manufacturing Systems, Management Science and the International Journal of Forecasting.
He also served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and was twice awarded the Naval Achievement Medal with Combat "V" for distinguished professional performance. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University and the M.B.A. in Finance and Economics from MIT's Sloan School of Management.
NELSON HARTUNIAN, Ph.D., Vice President
Dr. Hartunian directs our training, business consulting and customer support activities, and also oversees software development.
For more than 20 years, he has worked closely with hundreds of companies to implement improved demand planning, forecasting and inventory optimization processes. He has overseen successful implementations at some of the world's largest enterprises, and he uses this experience to constantly refine and improve Smart Software's products, consulting and training operations, making them industry models for success.
Before helping to launch Smart Software, Dr. Hartunian served on the faculties of Northeastern University, the University of Massachusetts, and Bentley College. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and M.S. in Physics from Tufts University. He also received his Ph.D. in Physics from Brandeis University, and was a fellow at MIT's Center for Advanced Engineering Studies.
THOMAS WILLEMAIN, Ph.D., Vice President
Smart Software is pleased to have a distinguished, active university professor directing its research and development efforts.
Dr. Willemain has held faculty positions at MIT and Harvard University, and is currently Professor in the Department of Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he teaches forecasting and applied statistics, and researches new forecasting methods.
In his vital role at Smart Software, Dr. Willemain directs R&D activities in forecasting and demand planning technology in software applications. He is co-inventor of the company's unique, patented Intermittent Demand Forecasting solution.
Dr. Willemain received his B.S. degree summa cum laude in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University, and he holds S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT.
