Since its founding in 1981, Smart Software has been a leading provider of demand planning, forecasting, and inventory optimization solutions. We help our customers utilize their corporate data including sales history, demand signals, supplier transactions, and more to better forecast demand, optimize inventory stocking requirements, and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency. Cutting Edge Technology

Our mission is to provide innovative analytical solutions that help our customers maximize sales and minimize inventory costs through improved demand forecasting and inventory planning. Our success is built on continuous innovation. We pioneered the first automatic demand forecasting utilizing statistical methods, developed a patented APICS award-winning method for intermittent demand forecasting, and were recently awarded a patent for a new probabilistic forecasting method that better leverages daily demand signals. The Smart IP&O cloud platform harnesses 40 years of forecasting innovation, is easy to use and implement, and delivers major inventory cost reductions and service level improvements for our customers.

Our Founders

Nelson Hartunian, Ph.D.

Chairman, Treasurer and Co-Founder

Nelson oversees Smart Software as Chairman of the Board. He has served in a variety of executive roles since founding Smart Software, most recently as President, and previously headed software development, sales, and customer services. Together with Dr. Willemain and Mr. Smart, Nelson designed and developed SmartForecasts®, the company’s flagship software solution. He received the B.S. in Electrical Engineering and M.S. in Physics from Tufts University and the Ph.D. in Physics from Brandeis University.

Thomas Willemain, Ph.D.

Senior VP for Research and Co-Founder

Tom directs Smart Software’s research and advanced development of forecasting and demand planning technology. He is also Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Willemain’s public service activities included engineering work with NASA, sabbatical visits to the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Security Agency, and further service in the Intelligence Community at the Institute for Defense Analyses Center for Computing Sciences. Previously Tom served on the faculties of both MIT and Harvard University. He received the BSE degree from Princeton University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT.

Charles Smart

Vice Chairman and Co-Founder

Charles led Smart Software as its founding president for nearly thirty years. He now serves as Vice Chairman. Prior to founding Smart Software, he was a management consultant at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI International) and Policy Analysis, Inc., and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Charles holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University and the MBA in Finance and Economics from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
